DIRECTIONS FOR USE / key
1. Thallus chemistry is best determined by TLC or HPLC. Spot tests and fluorescense may be misleading, because the concentration of the substances varies and low concentration may cause negative reactions.
2. The pruina of the apothecia is best seen on the disc of young apothecia; in large apothecia it may be completely abraded.
3. For the ascospore characters grey to darkgrey, full-grown spores have to be investigated. The ascospores undergo strong morphological changes during their development, and care should be taken to examine the right stages. Dark brown spores are generally over-aged and have lost much of the spore wall differentiation. Because they are very resistent, they are often the most numerous, and the only spores left in decaying apothecia.
