Located in the South-east of Brazil and with a population
of 41.5 million inhabitants – its capital, the city of São
Paulo, is the largest metropolis in South America – the
state of São Paulo, for historical and economic reasons, is
the most industrialized state in the country.
It is headquarters to three of the leading Brazilian
universities, two of which are among the two-hundred best in
the world, according to the fourth edition of the annual
ranking undertaken by The Times Higher Education Supplement.
According to The Science Citations Index Expanded (SCIE),
the academic scientists active in São Paulo are responsible
for more than 50 per cent of Brazilian scientific production
in terms of articles published in indexed periodicals.
