International Code of Botanical Nomenclature

(Saint Louis Code), Electronic version

APPENDIX IIB

NOMINA  FAMILIARUM  BRYOPHYTORUM  ET  SPERMATOPHYTORUM  CONSERVANDA

C.  BRYOPHYTA | E. SPERMATOPHYTA

The names of families printed in bold-face italics, arranged in alphabetical sequence within the major groups, are to be retained in all cases, with priority over unlisted synonyms (Art. 14.5) and homonyms (Art. 14.10).
When two listed names compete, the earlier must be retained unless the contrary is indicated or one of the competing names is listed in Art. 18.5. For any family including the type of an alternative family name, one or the other of these alternative names is to be used.
By deciding to abolish the footnote to Art. 14 Note 1 approved by the Tokyo Congress, the St Louis Congress instructed the Editorial Committee to revise the authorship, date and place of publication of all names listed in this Appendix. The starting-point date which was previously, on an informal basis, accepted for family names of Spermatophyta (publication of Jussieu's Genera plantarum on 4 Aug 1789) no longer applies. The numerous problems encountered by the Committee, and consequent limitations in the accuracy of the present list, are outlined in the preface to the Code.
