Born 1932. Studies of Biology and Chemistry at Freie Universität Berlin, Assistant, Institut für Systematische Botanik und Pflanzengeographie (FU Berlin), 1962-1965. Dr. rer. nat., Freie Universität Berlin (1964). Curator, Botanischer Garten und Botanisches Museum Berlin-Dahlem, 1965-1972; Senior Curator 1972-1974, since 1974 Director of the Herbarium and Professor; retired 1997.

Committee memberships:

• General Committee on Botanical Nomenclature, IAPT (since 1987).
• Advisory Board for the Flora of the Guianas (since 1983), Chairman (1988-2002).

Research interests:

• Neotropical Opiliaceae.
• Olacaceae of the Greater Antilles.
• Menispermaceae of the Guianas.
