- The Gesneriad
Reference Web by Ronald Myhr, Canada. The Gesneriad
Reference Web is a large site with over 700 pages of high
resolution images of gesneriads (organized alphabetically
and by genus), as well as a series of articles on the
taxonomy and botany of various gesneriad genera written
by experts. Gesneriads are the horticulturally-desirable
plant family to which African Violets, Gloxinias,
"lipstick plants" and many other decorative
species and hybrids belong. The author of the site is the
founder of the Toronto Gesneriad Society and the
immediate past editor of the newsletter of the Gesneriad
Images (Texas A&M University Bioinformatics Working
Group). Taxa represented in the TAMU-BWG Image
Database. Image files available here are mostly derived
from collaboration with the Hunt Institute for Botanical
Documentation and the Texas A&M University Press.

collection of nearly 400 images of plants occurring
naturally in Hawaii. Most of these species are endemic,
i.e., unique to Hawaii, USA.
Herbal Homepage. Henriette's Herbal Homepage features
herbs, herbs, herbs, and herbs. It's the home of the
medicinal and culinary herbfaqs; in addition you'll find
neat stuff, pictures, archives, links, programs etc.
Fruit Images: The Small Fruits of New York. The
Small Fruits of New York was the seventh and last in
a series of fruit monographs published by the New York
Agricultural Experiment Station. This reference was
completed by U. P. Hedrick in 1925 and has become a
classic reference for those working with cultivated
varieties of Rubus, Ribes and Fragaria. At
NCGR-Corvallis, the descriptions and illustrations in
this reference are used to verify identities of historic
cultivars growing in the small fruit germplasm

Botanical Garden of the State University of Leiden,
Netherlands, 1775. This book represents the MoBot
Research Division's effort to make the Library's holdings
more widely available. The Garden is fortunate enough to
have one of three or four known copies of this volume.
The book contains 50 hand-colored plates of prints, each
with an attendant butterfly, drawn and engraved by the
de la Flore de France. Hundreds of images of French
flowers - especially from the Alps, the Mediterranean
region, shores of Brittany; lots of orchids. The site is
maintained by Eric Bourneuf.

images. Most of the plants are alpine or arctic species.
Wildflower Page. Plants pictures from western
Prairie Wildflowers, USA, images from a book.
Wildflowers and Grasses. This site contains
photographs of native Kansas prairie wildflowers and
grasses, with descriptive information on each plant. The
wildflowers are listed by color. The scientific name,
size, time of flowering, and location are provided for
each plant. The page is maintained, and the photographs
taken, by Mike Haddock - Agriculture Librarian, Kansas
Medicinal Pflanzen. Hermann A. Köhler's magnus opus,
Medizinal-Pflanzen, was published in 1887, eight
years after his death. The set of three volumes included
plants of medicinal interest from several European
nations. This web site was created from slides taken from
one of the rare copies of the Medizinal-Pflanzen
in the Missouri Botanical Garden.

(Hawaii, USA) Campus Plants by Dr. Gerald Carr. More
than 325 species of plants on the campus of the
University of Hawaii at Manoa are characterized in words
and over 400 color images. Common names, family names,
scientific names, campus locations, and notes of

Bleeker's Home Page, the Netherlands.Marco Bleeker is
a Dutch botanist and photographer. Shunguo Liu also
maintains an archive of Bleeker's pictures site in the

Diemerzeedijk (Amsterdam, the Netherlands) -
Marco Bleeker's plant images from a former waste
dump. The Diemerzeedijk was some 25 years ago
a waste dump just outside Amsterdam. It has been
left alone since then, and nature reclaimed it -
a beautiful vegetation with an explosion of
blooming flowers in July/Aug. But there is dioxin
in the soil, and the city wants to build houses.

National Plant Photographic Index, Australia. The
Australian National Botanic Gardens manages a large
collection of photographic slides of its activities and
Australian botany. The bulk of the collection consists of
identified Australian plant species, but there is also a

of the New Jersey Pinelands (Pine Barrens), USA. The
New Jersey Pine Barrens, or Pinelands, is a unique
natural area covering over 1 million acres of the Outer
Coastal Plain in southern and central New Jersey. This
Web site contains a collection of color photographs of 45
pinelands plants. Below each photograph are the
scientific and common names of the plant, the family to
which it belongs, its approximate height at maturity, a
brief description of the plant and its habitat, and the
place where the photograph was taken.

Francisco Bay Area Wildflowers by Michael Paul Thoma,
Secret Garden (Floral Radiographs). The secret garden
is a collection of floral radiographs produced by
professor emeritus, Albert Richards. These stunning
radiographs reveal the "secret life" of flowers
as you can see several layers at the same time. The
secret garden is also available in book form.
Catalog of Botanical Illustrations. The Department of
Botany of the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum
of Natural History, USA, has created a database of the
more than 3000 botanical illustrations curated by the
department's scientific illustrator, Alice Tangerini. As
part of a long-term project to make an on-line
illustrated catalog of these illustrations available for
their staff and others needing access to this
information, the department offers 500 images in the
three families that have been completed: Bromeliaceae,
Cactaceae, and Melastomataceae.
