[Keynote address]

The implementation of common interfaces for locally distributed and heterogeneous biological collection databases highly depends on the existence of an appropriate profile to hide internal database structures and to clarify syntax and semantics of the data provided. Being the interface between consumer and provider of collection information it has to balance the need for scientific correctness and adequateness with a certain simplicity to encourage data holders to take part in a network.
The presentation outlines already existing profiles and substantiates the need for a common profile development. To fulfill the requirements given above it should allow to provide data at different levels ranging from simple free text fields to highly atomized data items. It further calls for a new TDWG task group to define the biological collection profile and encourage collaboration.
