ITALIC - The information system on Italian lichens

* Department of Biology, University of Trieste, via Giorgieri 10, I 34127 Trieste, Italy

ITALIC, a new information system on Italian lichens searchable on line, will be described. It organizes information from three main databases: a) general checklist of Italian lichens, b) herbaria, c) regional checklists, and from two archives: a) iconographic archive, b) archive of predictive distributional maps. The latter are automatically obtained by joining information from the general checklist (commoness/rarity in 9 phytoclimatic subdivisions of the country) with a GIS-based map subdivided into 97 Operational Geographic Units. Among other outputs, ITALIC permits to simulate "virtual relevès" of lichen vegetation in different parts of the country, through a combination of ecological indicator values (for pH, light, humidity and eutrophication) and several other parameters.
